What makes Art in Motion different from other studios in Thunder Bay?

Art in Motion sets itself apart with its focus on dance as an art form. Our school is committed to a high quality of instruction and providing our students with valuable experiences. The Art in Motion team has a wealth of knowledge and strong passion for dance that we are eager to share with all dancers. Are your teachers qualified/experienced?

Art in Motion is dedicated to providing all of its students with qualified and experienced teachers. Art in Motion is a professional environment that only employs instructors who are accomplished and mature dancers and/or teachers. Teachers must possess a wealth of experience in the art form and have a passion for professional development to ensure our dancers receive the best possible training. 


Where can I get dance attire?

Art in Motion Dance School has a storefront. Here you will be able to get all of your dance wear needs. The store carries all dance shoes, the uniform bodysuit for Creative Movement and Mini Movers, as well as the ballet exam bodysuit for our competitive dancers. You will also find bodysuits that can be worn in jazz and acro classes, dance tights, accessories, Art in Motion clothing, and more!


What classes are mandatory for competitive dancers?

Competitive dancers are required to take ballet exam classes as well as ballet choreography. Dancers must also take the jazz technique class and choreography. Tap is optional for dancers, however, they must do both the choreography and technique classes if they wish to participate in tap.

If a students has been given permission by the director to do a solo or duet, the dancer must be taking a group class in that genre. For example: if your dancer would like to do a lyrical solo, they must be registered in a weekly lyrical class.


Can my child do a solo?

The studio director must approve competitive dancers to sign up for solos, duets and trios upon request. Privileges will be taken away if a student is not adhering to the attendance and studio policies and procedures. Having a solo, duet or trio is a very big commitment and it is the dancers responsibility to ensure they are fully dedicated and motivated to put in the work. Dancers will only be approved for solos, duets or trios if they are responsible dancers that will practice on their own time, remember choreography and are technically ready for the challenge. 


What competitions do your competitive students participate in?

It is mandatory for all competitive dancers to compete in local competitions that Art in Motion is registered with each year. The out-of-town competition is mandatory for the Junior level and above. The competitions that Art in Motion registers with changes each year based on scheduling and other factors. 


Why do you have a uniform for exam/technique classes?

Students must have the required uniform. Having fitted and standard dance wear helps the teachers to see the students’ bodies for appropriate alignment and placement. Cleanliness of uniform is important for all dancers not only for comfort but to instill a sense of discipline. It is very important that dancers adhere to the Art in Motion attire to show respect for the discipline, their training and to their class teacher. 


Where can I find pricing?

Prices for classes can be found on our online registration. Prices show the class amount for the full year. HST will be added to all dance class fees. Registration can be found here.

How do payments work?

Payments are made at the beginning of each term by the specified dates. Term one is September-December, and term two is January-May. Payments can be made in full, or by semester. A 5% discount is given for fully paid tuition fees for the year if paid in full (semester one & two) at summer registration by the specified date. All discounts are before tax.


What level will my child be placed in?

Students are placed in classes based on age and skill level. Students may be moved up or down a group level. This decision is made only by the school director. Please remember that teachers make these informed decisions based on their extensive education in dance.


What is your attendance policy?

As outlined in our registration package, good attendance is imperative for any competitive dancer. Coming to dance is a commitment and a responsibility; If those commitments. If a student is going to miss a class for any reason, the studio director and class teacher must be informed, or the absence must be documented in the online Parent Portal. Teachers will excuse dancers for extenuating circumstances such as extreme illness, family emergencies and other reasons deemed excusable.

Students must arrive dressed and ready to dance as soon as class begins.
