Ballet

Ballet classes work to develop poise, posture, flexibility, fluidity of movement and artistry while strengthening the dancer’s overall abilities and presentation. At Art in Motion, competitive dancers are required to participate in both choreography and exam work. Taking ballet exams provides dancers with goals, and the framework of skills needed to nurture improvement. Our studio trains and participates in The British Association of Teachers of Dancing (BATD) ballet examinations. Extra preparation classes are offered in months leading up to the examination in which additional information, costs and rehearsal times will apply. Ballet examinations are typically held in June.

Pointe

Pointe work is started under the direction of the school director and class teacher for students who are adequately prepared to begin training on pointe. Pointe work is only started once students are technically strong enough to begin. Starting pointe work too early or with improper ballet technique can result in serious injuries.

Jazz

Jazz dance is a fun way for dancers to develop their dance technique. Jazz is an upbeat and energetic class that focuses on strength, posture, extensions, control and creating a strong foundation for other genres such as lyrical, contemporary and acro. Jazz for all levels of dance improves technique, strength and flexibility and to enhance performance skills.

At Art in Motion, competitive dancers are required to take both jazz exam and choreography classes. Extra preparation classes are offered in months leading up to the examination in which additional information, costs and rehearsal times will apply. Our studio trains and participates in Associated Dance Arts for Professional Teachers (ADAPT) Jazz examinations.

Acro

Acro dance merges classical dance technique with elements of gymnastics, tumbling and basic contortion. These classes improve strength, flexibility, body control and awareness.

Acro is optional for competitive dancers. Competitive dancers enrolled in acro must also be taking the required ballet and jazz classes to keep up with their strength, flexibility and basic dance skills.

Art in Motion is dedicated to providing our students with safe, and proper acro techniques and skills.

Tap

Dancers will learn basic tap rhythms, combinations, musicality and terminology. As they progress, dancers focus on more intricate footwork, syncopation and more advanced combinations. Tap is optional for competitive dancers.

At Art in Motion, competitive dancers participate in both tap choreography and exam work. Our studio trains and participates in The British Association of Teachers of Dancing (BATD) tap examinations. Extra preparation classes are offered in months leading up to the examination in which additional information, costs and rehearsal times will apply. Tap examinations are typically held in June.

Contemporary/Lyrical

Lyrical is all about self-expression for mature dancers. It is a fusion of ballet, jazz and contemporary. The style is inspired by lyrics of the music and utilizes the words to express emotion and movement.

Contemporary focuses more on abstract movements and lines, exploring creativity and challenging the elements of dance.

Both lyrical and contemporary classes are optional for competitive dancers. However, one or the other is recommended for competitive dancers for the development of body awareness, emotional execution, movement quality and style.
